Paper Description

Edit Paper Description Content

This paper supports the development of three graduate attributes: the ability to communicate effectively in culturally and linguistically diverse contexts, the ability to integrate Māori and indigenous perspectives in the contexts of disciplinary knowledges, and the ability to grasp and apply disciplinary knowledges from within local and global perspectives.

This paper examines basic concepts of intercultural competency where consideration is given to individual and cross cultural values and practice in the organisational context. Through lectures, participative activities, tutorials and assessments, students develop an understanding of concepts such as the cultural proficiency continuum, high and low context communication, diversity and inclusion in organisations, working with and in Māori business, multicultural teams, and cultural approaches to leadership.

Edit Assessments Content

Assessments Overview: there are five parts to the assessment:

  1. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) – 20% (Individual)

There are 5 sets of reflective questions, with students earning 4% for each MCQ. The MCQ cover the lecture material, webinars and the readings. The MCQs will only be for the first seven sessions of the paper. The Moodle link for the MCQ opens each week at 9am on Thursday and closes on the Sunday of the same week at 11:30pm. Once you start the MCQ you have 45 minutes to complete your answers.

  2. Case Studies and Tutorial Participation - 20% (Individual) You will have 8 case studies which you will analyse and answer questions for and submit online prior to your tutorial. You will also need to demonstrate active participation in both case study discussion and tutorial activities, with each tutorial earning 2.5%. 2% will be given for participation, while 0.5% is given for attendance. See the Tutorial description for case study details.

  3. Understanding Cultural Values & their Relevance – 20% (Group) In Session 5 you will learn about Māori culture. For your group assignment, you have to write a report that: (1) Analyses and describes Māori culture using the GLOBE dimensions you learnt in Session 3; (2) Compares and contrasts the context of communication of Māori culture with a culture of your choice (Pākehā, Chinese, Indian etc.), and what it means when it comes to interpersonal interactions (drawing learning from Session 4, 5, and 6); (3) Shows what each member has learnt from cultural humility and cultural competence when it comes to understanding and working with people from cultures having different values (note: the report has to have learning from EACH group member). The report is due on Thursday 5 May 2022 (at 11:30pm).

  4. Group project presentation - 15% (Group)
Each group will present on the topic 'How can you enhance diversity & inclusion in NZ organizations?" Groups will need to apply their presentation to one New Zealand organisation. The presentation takes place in tutorial classes on the week of the 30th May 2022.
  5. A Review on Diversity and Management - 25% (Individual)
  6. You are required to read literature on diversity and management for the last 10 years (years 2011 - 2021). You are expected to read at least 10 papers (make sure you properly reference them - 10 is the minimum required). Word Count, 3000-3500 words. Due Sunday 19 June 2022.
